57 Gun Pistol - I never thought I would ever see another pistol chambered in 5.7x28mm. Having started life in the early 90s as the caliber used in both the FN P90 and its close companion, the FN Five-seveN, the caliber has hardly disappeared since then, only to be used in a handful of firearms over the years, mostly rifles. Ruger aims to change that today with the release of its new Ruger-57 pistol chambered in the miniature high-velocity 5.7x28mm cartridge.
Ruger generously sent a copy of the first production Ruger-57 to TFB to test and tear apart. I put the pistol through its paces and today we're going to discuss the good, the bad, and the uncomfortable about the new Ruger-57. But first, let's get the specs out of the way.
57 Gun Pistol
The Ruger didn't take any hits. The Ruger-57 was promptly shipped to me in a nice plastic Ruger case. The insides of the case were not padded, but were molded to each element of the box. Great presentation. The Ruger-57 comes with a case and an adapter plate for the Vortex red dot sight.

The glass-reinforced high-quality plastic felt solid, and the grip texture was perfect—especially when compared to the FN Five-seveN. Since the FN Five-seveN is the closest competitor, I will mention many things about the Ruger-57 in the context of the FN Five-seveN. I can't tell you how happy steel magazines made me. FN's polymer magazine offerings have always pushed me in the wrong direction. I don't have a problem with polymer magazines, but the Five-seveN just didn't feel right, and throwing them out would be a constant concern.
Frustratingly, my first impression when firing the pistol was not so great, the trigger was a bit springy before the break and it didn't give me a reliable indication of when the pistol was firing. Also, there was a gap between the bottom of the trigger and the inside of the trigger guard
Big enough for some of my fingers to fit between it and every time I pulled the trigger it pinched my finger unless I gripped it. It's not a deal breaker, but it forced me to adjust to avoid squeezing every time I pull the trigger.
Fn Five Seven: An Extraordinary Pistol Chambered In Unusual Caliber
The first appearance of the Ruger-57 in the series was excellent. The gun came with a Triple K Manufacturing holster designed specifically for the Ruger-57, but I chose not to use it. Leather holsters are not my favorite, but the one I was sent seemed to be of quality construction and was marked with the Ruger logo. I'm sure this would make a good OWB holster if you decide to take this thing out to the farm for a quick pest control.
I wasn't able to take advantage of the pre-packaged optical slide and adapter because I couldn't find the Venom Vortex or Viper in time for the review, but it gave me enough time to get behind the scopes to make them very well. in front of the eye is a nice big green fiber optic column that is easy to see even in broad daylight. Rear fenders adjust for wind and altitude. Needless to say, staying on target was no problem with the sights.
Your mileage may vary on either case, the holster would certainly work for those who want to carry it, but most target shooters will probably find a pistol case to be a sturdier form of transport, especially with the rules of several public poles.
I would really like to put an optic on the Ruger-57, but time and cost prevent me from doing so. Handguns and optics are more popular than ever, so I'm glad to see that Ruger is keeping up with industry trends and giving customers a choice. There was also a full 5-slot Picatinny rail to accommodate even the largest lights.
First Look: The Ruger 57 Pistol
I only tested the Ruger-57 with one type of ammo because it was the only one available to me at the time. I used FN SS197 40 grain Hornady V-max blue JHP type. This round achieves approximately 1712 FPS out of the new 57, making it a respectable flat shooting pistol. I did not notice a single failure during the entire test. Ruger would like to inform customers that it is NOT recommended to use their loads. Additionally, they also cannot guarantee the pistol's reliability when using sights heavier than 1 ounce in conjunction with 27-grain cartridges such as the SS198 green tip or the FN SS195.
The trigger, which started off a bit grainy, actually improved for me as I shot the pistol more and more. At the end of the test, I put nearly 400 rounds through the gun (barrel smoking at one point) and still didn't notice a single malfunction.
Some issues with gun control and ergonomics were minor, but I'll list them here. Sorry the slide was stiff -
Simply lifting the slide seemed to work better and with much less effort. I wasn't a fan of how far the magazine release was. Even with fairly large hands, I couldn't reach the magazine release without adjusting my hand, and I did so easily with the M1911A1.
Ruger Threaded Barrel Kit A Hit On A 57
While I'm not a fan of manual safeties, the ambidextrous safety on this gun is low profile and out of the way. I had no problem avoiding it when I didn't need to, and it was just as easy to activate. In my opinion, the frame-mounted safety beats the FN Five-seveN sliding safety. That said, if Ruger offered a Ruger-57 without a manual safety, I'd take it in a heartbeat.
Another little thing I really wish they added would be a threaded barrel. I know there should be a lot of accessories at the Ruger Shop release, so I'm hoping one of them will be a threaded barrel.
Overall, I thought the Ruger-57 was a great pistol. It was a lot of fun to shoot and it was accurate and reliable to near perfection. I might even say that the Ruger-57 is better than the FN Five-seveN. I like that more guns are using more durable materials, and while I had some minor quibbles with some of the ergonomics and accessories in general, I really like the pistol.
