The SIG P210 Carry may be new, but the SIG P210 line has won the hearts of many military gun collectors over the years. Originally designed as a 9mm service pistol for the Swiss Army in the 1940s, the P210 has been in production for six decades, earning a well-deserved reputation for quality and craftsmanship like a fine Swiss watch.

Although the Swiss are not known for great military power, their weapons are known to be of high quality for soldiers who know how to use them. Originally adopted in 1949, the SIG P49 (later renamed the P210) featured a full-contact steel frame and slide, with a high-quality barrel and superior trigger. With the right ammo, the spec for the original SIG P210 was a five-shot group of two inches or less at 50 yards. Most pistols would struggle to offer this level of accuracy at half the distance.

In reviewing the design features, the original SIG P210 certainly sounds like a target pistol. Specifications include a single-action mechanism with sharp trigger, single-sided safety, single-stack magazine with eight-round capacity, heel-mounted magazine release and all-steel construction. Compared to other popular 9mm service pistols, it is one that rewards marksmanship over firearms. However, as time changed everything, the SIG P210 saw the sunset of its career as a military sidearm, replaced by the higher-capacity, polymer-framed, striker-fired wonder pistol. The original Swiss production line of the SIG P210 was shut down in 2005, turning it into a collector's item.

Seeing an opportunity with the market for used SIG P210s going for thousands of dollars each, Sig Sauer introduced the New Hampshire-made variant in 2016. To the untrained eye, the Swiss-made and US-made examples will look remarkably similar, but the remake has some subtle updates on the manufacturing and customer user experience.
For the reintroduction, Sig Sauer made several changes that pistol shooters wanted, including a more refined safety that was moved to the rear of the frame similar to the 1911. Additionally, the heel release was changed to a more conventional one. and easier access to the trigger guard (technically some original P210s had a standard thumb release, but that's unusual). Finally, a knurled front slide, updated sights, extended beavertail, checkered front strap, and oversized, contoured slide release are included. Some updates were also made internally, resulting in a new variant called the P210A. These new models started out as Target and Standard models, approaching the traditional SIG P210 model of 60 years earlier. For 2022, Sig Sauer has released something more practical in the Sig P210 Carry model.

Sig Sauer offers many options for their pistols, some practical and some for hobbyists. The P210 Carry is a well-designed concealed carry option for fans of this popular military/target pistol. Starting with the size, the frame remains the same dimensions, but is made of aluminum alloy instead of steel, reducing the weight to 29 ounces. The barrel has been shortened from five inches to 4.1 inches, and the slide has been cut to fit and flush with the dust cover. From the front of the blunt nose to the rear of the frame, the gun is 7.75 inches long and 5.6 inches tall. These dimensions are very close to the Colt Lightweight Commander 1911.
While purists may not like Sig's update to the P210's controls, I find it more ergonomic for right-handed shooters, with controls similar to the Model 1911. Like the Model 1911, I find the safety a little awkward for lefties. -hand operation only, and the slide release must be operated with the thumb of the support hand when reloading the slide lock. The controller is almost too big, but is serrated so it can be used as a nice thumb rest. It works with a positive click to signal on and off.
Because this pistol is designed around 9mm compared to the .45 of the 1911, the grip size is shorter fore and aft than the iconic American pistol. A finely machined grip sits on the front strap of the frame, which helps grip the gun. The contoured and textured black G10 grip is very nice, fits my hand and locks my grip on the gun during rapid fire. There is a thumb relief to easily reach the magazine opening, and the grip is cut to act as a magwell for faster loading of new magazines. The grip is a nice compliment to the durable Sig Nitron finish on the rest of the gun. Overall, the SIG P210 Carry offers the look and feel of a fine pistol.
Some may be surprised to learn that the original prototype SIG P210 had a 16-round magazine, but an 8-round single stack design was adopted. The Sig Sauer P210 Carry has a nice pair of magazines that feature some updates over the original magazines. They are not backwards compatible with older guns due to dropping the magazine and base plate reminiscent of the old SIG P239. If you want a few extra rounds, there are some aftermarket options that increase length and capacity.

At a distance it is easy to see that this gun is a shooter. Accuracy of the Sig Sauer P210 Carry is superb, with loads ranging from 115-grain recycled bullets to a variety of 115- and 124-grain Hornady XTP loads, 115-grain Black Hills FMJ, 115-grain Federal Syntec and FMJ , US 115 cartridges -grain HP, as well as Winchester 147-grain FMJ and Nosler 147-grain ASP subsonic. Part of the accuracy equation is the carbon steel barrel, as well as the crisp clean break of the trigger. While not as easy to use as precision scopes, SigLite night sights in a 3-dot configuration work well on practical paper and steel targets.
During dynamic training, the P210 Carry is easy to hold with its G10 grip and slim contours. The aluminum frame has a little more recoil than the solid steel model, but is very controlled for more target shots. In the hand, the pistol aimed well, naturally hitting the target rather than struggling to aim the target like some other pistol designs. With multiple targets, I often find myself wishing for more bullets in the magazine because they go so quickly while I'm having fun.
Functionally, the gun runs all ammo options without issue. However, one of the magazines hit several times when locking the slide after several uses. The companion in the tank is steel with a polymer backing. On several occasions, the slide would catch on this polymer mount, seemingly locking the magazine inside the gun. Forcing the slide back and pushing the slide release up took care of it and a small scrap of polymer under the follower took care of it.
Shooting the gun reveals why the SIG P210 is a fan favorite. The inherent accuracy, excellent trigger and low recoil will quickly put a smile on your face. Compared to other carry gun options available, there is no slide cutout for the red dot, it has a reduced capacity for its size, no additional rails, and does not have the excessive slide cutout and finish options found on other pistols. However, the P210 Carry offers enough pistoleros features for those who place a premium on accuracy and a refined shooting experience. This is a weapon for the experts and to quote Obi-Wan Kenobi: "It is an elegant weapon for a more civilized age." By now, the SIG Sauer P365 shouldn't be an unfamiliar commodity to anyone in the firearms community. In early 2018, amid industry buzz, SIG Sauer announced a micro-compact 9mm semi-automatic pistol that turned the concealed carry world on its head: a pistol smaller than the famous Glock 43 in almost every dimension—even width—yet still packed . 10+1 rounds into a small magazine with a steel body. No compromises though – the new P365 (so named because you can carry it concealed 365 days a year) has excellent steel sights, an excellent trigger pull straight from SIG's own P320 manual, full controls with an additional thumb safety, a slide to advance serrations, with the "To hell and back" reliability and accuracy SIG Sauer offers. That ball that can be easily played in an increasingly crowded and competitive market? Yep, SIG knocked it out of the park. The SIG Sauer P365 is now the gold standard in small 9mm carry pistols.
